Ground broken for $37 million hospital in Madison

• MADISON, S.D. (AP) -- Construction is getting underway on a $37 million hospital in Madison.
• Officials broke ground Thursday evening for the project that Madison Community Hospital CEO Tammy Miller calls "a visionary thing." The facility will include state-of-the-art equipment and expanded services.
• Crews will arrive at the 22-acre site on Monday to begin about 1 ½ years of work. The new hospital is scheduled to open in May 2015.
• The independent hospital and attached clinic in the city of about 6,600 people will replace a facility that is more than a half century old.

Oglala Sioux get $8.8 million grant to fix road

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Oglala Sioux Tribe is getting a federal grant of nearly $8.8 million to upgrade a road on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwest South Dakota.
• The grant is part of a total of $474 million in U.S. Transportation Department grants for projects in 37 states.
• Money from the DOT's Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program will upgrade 17.6 miles of loose gravel road to a paved surface.
• The Transportation Department says the project will improve connections to jobs, educational institutions and health care facilities on the reservation, while also supporting tourism on the reservation and the south unit of Badlands National Park. The project also is designed to improve safety on the road.
• The upgrade will include a designated bicycle lane.

3 challenges to Pine Ridge alcohol vote denied

• PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) -- A hearing is scheduled for later this month on a challenge to last month's vote legalizing alcohol on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
• Election Supervisor Francis Pumpkin Seed says a couple of tribal members filed a restraining order.
• He says it's one of three challenges the election commission has denied, and none of the three took it to the Supreme Court, which would be the next step under
