Ground-breaking for $37M Madison hospital delayed

• MADISON, S.D. (AP) -- The death of a longtime doctor in Madison has delayed ground-breaking for a $37 million hospital.
• Richard Sample was a past president of the medical staff at the existing Madison Community Hospital and president of Interlakes Medical Center in the city. He died last Thursday of cancer at age 64.
• Hospital CEO Tammy Miller says Sample had been a part of planning for the new hospital since the beginning.
• Ground-breaking for the new facility has been moved from Tuesday to Thursday.

SD DOT urges removal of hay from road ditches

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Transportation is asking farmers and ranchers to follow deadlines for removing processed hay from highway ditches.
• State regulations require that hay be removed from the highway right of way within 30 days of being processed, but no later than Oct. 1.
• Department officials say removing hay bales from along highways is important for the safety of motorists. The bales can be a hazard for vehicles forced to leave the road and can sometimes restrict a driver's view.
• Hay left in road ditches late in the year can also cause snowdrifts across the highway.

UND and SDSU meet in Grand Forks for Potato Bowl

• GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- Former North Central Conference rivals South Dakota State and the University of North Dakota meet Saturday in Grand Forks.
• North Dakota's football team is putting its 10-game Potato Bowl winning streak on the line.
• The Jacks are coming off a 2012 FCS Playoff appearance but have not played in Grand Forks since the Alerus Center opened in 2001.
• The teams have met just once as Division I foes, but it will be the 85th time they have met since 1906. UND leads the series 46-33-5.
