Dakota Wesleyan says enrollment surpasses record

• MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) -- Dakota Wesleyan University says its enrollment is its highest ever.
• Initial figures show that the Mitchell school's enrollment for the fall is 873 students, 170 of which are freshmen. That surpasses the university's all-time record of 850 students in 1966.
• DWU says its retention of freshman to sophomore students has reached 77 percent, a jump from five years ago when it was 57 percent.
• President Amy Novak says a lot of the credit should go to the university staff and a new science facility dedicated Thursday.
• Final counts for enrollment and retention won't be in until later into September, after the final drop date.

Red Cross helps storm victims on Pine Ridge

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The American Red Cross has helped 21 people who were displaced by a possible tornado at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in western South Dakota.
• The organization's Black Hills Area Chapter reported that two homes were destroyed and four others were damaged in Friday evening's storm, which also knocked down some power poles and left some homes without power.
• In eastern South Dakota, a severe thunderstorm with lightning and large hail damaged some Sioux Falls businesses, some cars and other buildings Saturday night.
• Lightning struck the Target store in the Empire East Mall, tearing a hole in the roof and breaking a couple of gas lines, according to the Sioux Falls Fire Department. The storm also damaged a loading dock at the J.C. Penney store across the street in the Empire Mall.
• Hail also smashed car windows in the area. Fire Capt. Nick Luther said one woman was injured when hail broke several windows in her vehicle, but her injuries were minor and she refused medical attention. No one was injured by the lightning strike at Target, he said.
