1896: Castlewood recorded a low temperature of 30 degrees. This was the coldest temperature for the month of August, 1896 for the entire state of South Dakota.

1977: Street, underpass, and basement flooding resulted from near record to record rainfall in a four hour period in the Minneapolis and St. Paul Metropolitan Area. Reports of 6 to 7 inches of rainfall were reported in Hennepin County, causing extensive damage to 15 homes, with 365 homes and 8 businesses receiving partial damage.

1776: General George Washington took advantage of a heavy fog to evacuate Long Island, NY after a defeat. Adverse winds kept the British fleet from intervening. The move saved the Continental Army to fight another day.

2003: Four children and their mother were killed when their minivan was washed from the Kansas Turnpike near Emporia after torrential rains flooded the highway.
