• The semi hauling hay suffered front end damage to the tractor, resulting in fluids being spilled onto the highway, The truck came to a halt in the north bound lane, facing south, on highway 37 in front of the Ken's C-Express Store. The other semi was able to come to a stop after being hit in the trailer and causing a flat tire, a block away on highway 12 next to Lori's Pharmacy.
• A Ken's C-Express worker tried to call a member of the fire department, thinking they could at least contain the accident and control traffic, but was unable to reach the person. They then called one of the off-duty police officers at home.
• "I figured if I could get the fire department to respond," Vickie Sippel said. "They would at least have lights to inform people and could start the clean up."
• The first officer on the scene was a Brown County Sheriff's Deputy at about
