SD State Fair salutes veterans, military personnel
• HURON, S.D. (AP) -- All veterans and active military personnel can get into the South Dakota State Fair for free on Thursday.
• A program saluting veterans will be held at 10:30 a.m. CDT Thursday on the fairgrounds in Huron.
• The keynote speaker will be state Veterans Affairs Secretary Larry D. Zimmerman. He is the first secretary of the department, which was created when a previous agency was split into two so that one department handles veterans affairs and the other oversees the South Dakota National Guard.
• Zimmerman is preparing a new vision and mission statement for the department, which serves more than 70,000 South Dakota veterans.

Aberdeen film festival judges cut entries to 65
• ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) -- Judges for the upcoming South Dakota Film Festival in Aberdeen have whittled down the 274 submissions to 65 films for the seventh-annual event.
• Tom Black, one of the judges, told the Aberdeen American News (http://bit.ly/1dJP6Fs ) that he wouldn't play about half of them for his dog. He says now they get so many great films from around the world that the bad stuff is thrown out quickly and good stuff rises to the top.
• The eight judges started reviewing this year's submissions in January and completed most of the work by the end of last month.
• Most of it's done individually using an online service and film submission tool called Without a Box.
• The festival runs Sept. 26-29 at Capitol Theatre.

SDSU Extension holding winter wheat meeting
• DRAPER, S.D. (AP) -- SDSU Extension is holding a winter wheat meeting in Draper on Tuesday.
• Agronomist Nathan Mueller will discuss changes to the recommended and acceptable-promising variety list, results of the crop performance testing trials and highlights of the production year.
