Standing Rock man plans to plead guilty to assault

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- A man says he will plead guilty to domestic assault on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
• Samuel Bryce Silk Jr. is facing federal charges of assault by a habitual offender and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
• Court documents show that Silk plans to plead guilty to the habitual offender charge. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
• Silk has three prior convictions in tribal court for domestic assault.
• The Standing Rock reservation straddles North and South Dakota.

SD lawmakers seek public comment on domestic abuse

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota legislative panel studying the state's domestic abuse laws will hold two more hearings to take public comments.
• A hearing will be held Monday at the Yankton Public Library at 5:15 p.m.
• A final hearing will be held Tuesday at the Rapid City Public Library Main Branch beginning at 6 p.m.
• The committee asks that people discuss their experiences with the domestic abuse laws. The lawmakers want the public testimony to focus on the legal definition of domestic abuse, protection orders, reporting processes and other related issues.
• The committee says its study is not focusing on custody of children, causes of domestic abuse or rehabilitation.

SD college receives $2 million for wellness center

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is moving forward on a student wellness center after an alumnus donated $2 million for the project.
• The school says the donation by Stephen D. Newlin should allow construction to start in February.
• Students have already approved nearly $7 million in fees for the $8.9 million project.
• The 34,000-square feet building will include two basketball courts, a group fit
