Vandals strike United Tribes campus in Rapid City
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Vandals struck the Rapid City campus of United Tribes Technical College over the weekend, three days after the Bismarck, N.D.-based school held a grand opening celebration for its Black Hills Learning Center.
• The vandals targeted doors and windows early Saturday and caused as much as $75,000 in damage, according to property owner Hani Shafai. Police were investigating but did not immediately identify any suspects.
• A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest, said Shafai, who is president of Dream Design International.
• "Our community cannot tolerate this kind of activity," he said.
• The school is housed in the former National American University building. Officials with United Tribes Technical College, which is run by the five American Indian tribes in North Dakota, said the branch in the Black Hills of western South Dakota could provide much-needed skilled labor for the Bakken oil fields in western North Dakota.
• Shafai said he hopes the completion of a street construction project near the campus will provide more access and better lighting to help deter future acts of vandalism, while bolstering safety for the college's students and faculty.
• Classes at the school are scheduled to begin Aug. 26.

Checks done on 99 sex offenders in central SD
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Law enforcement agencies in central South Dakota teamed up last week to conduct checks on 99 registered sex offenders in the region.
• The U.S. Marshals Service says officials are continuing to investigate a handful of cases in which sex offenders might be prosecuted for breaking the law.
• Sex offenders must register where they live and work, and they can be prosecuted if the information they register is inaccurate.
• The U.S. Marshals Service is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for investigating sex offender registration violations.
