•  VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- A Minnesota-based software services company has broken ground on an information technology support center that will bring 200 jobs to southeast South Dakota.
•  Eagle Creek Software Services is building the center in Vermillion, and it's also partnering with the University of South Dakota to train eventual employees.
•  Company executives and area leaders broke ground on the new center on Tuesday.
•  Eagle Creek chief executive Ken Behrendt tells KTIV television (http://bit.ly/17Lq02S ) that there's a need for STEM jobs in the country, and the problem can be solved in the Midwest.
•  The firm worked with USD to help home-grow new tech talent through a customized four-course certificate.

State Sen. Olson resigns to become energy CEO

•  PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Republican state Sen. Russ Olson of Madison is resigning his seat to become the chief executive officer of Heartland Consumer Power District.
•  Heartland says Olson has been with the company since 2005, working on various economic development and customer service programs.
•  Gov. Dennis Daugaard expects to name an appointee prior to the 2014 legislative session.
•  Daugaard says Olson has been a strong, well-respected majority leader for South Dakota and his district.
•  Olson has served in the state Senate since 2009 after serving one term in the state House. He's been Senate majority leader since 2011.
•  Olson represents District 8, which encompasses Lake, Miner, Moody and Sanborn counties.
•  The resignation is effective Sept. 30.

SD state Rep. Stace Nelson to make US Senate run

•  PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State Rep. Stace Nelson, who often has quarreled with party leaders in the South Dakota Legislature, said Tuesday he will seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate because Congress needs someone who will stick to promises to oppose increased taxes and government spending.
