Sanford underground lab has $20 million budget

•  Sanford Underground Research Facility has $20 million operating budget for the next year
•  LEAD, S.D. (AP) -- The board that oversees the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota's Black Hills has approved a $20 million budget for the next year.
•  The Black Hills Pioneer reports (http://bit.ly/19aagcW) that the lab budget includes $12.7 million from the U.S. Department of Energy, $2 million from a prior state appropriation, $3.8 million from a gift given by T. Denny Sanford, and some money from other funding sources.
•  Officials at the federal supported lab nearly a mile underground are conducting research on complex subjects such as nuclear reactions within stars and dark matter, an elusive substance that scientists believe makes up 25 percent of the universe.
•  Sanford Lab Executive Director Mike Headley says most of the operating money is used for salaries, and the lab tries to operate as efficiently as possible.

Authorities arrest 2 more in sex trafficking sting

•  SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- An Internet crimes against children task force has made two more arrests as part of its investigation into sex trafficking at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
•  Federal, state and Rapid City authorities say that 42-year-old James Eugene Larive Jr. of Belle Fourche (FOOSH) and 20-year-old Curtis Ray Austin of Rapid City have been arrested for solicitation of a minor. Attorney information for Larive and Austin was not immediately available.
•  Last week, authorities arrested seven men on charges of trying to pay for sex with underage girls after responding to online classified ads placed during the rally. Officials say the men responded to the ads and then negotiated with undercover agents who were acting as pimps for 12- and 13-year-old girls.
