Great Plains farm expenses up about 20 percent

•  FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- Production expenses rose about 20 percent for farmers in the Great Plains last year.
•  The Agriculture Department says production expenses in the region totaled $88.8 billion in 2012, up from $73.8 billion in 2011.
•  The region includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
•  Farm production expenses nationally rose about 10 percent over the year, to $351.8 billion.

Aberdeen, Brown County get money to fight drugs

•  PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The Aberdeen Police Department and the Brown County Sheriff's Office have been awarded a $12,500 grant for a vehicle and surveillance equipment to be used in drug investigations.
•  South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the money comes from a fund that contains money seized during drug arrests.
•  Jackley says the money will help the Aberdeen Police Department and the Brown County Sheriff's Office in drug control and the apprehension of drug offenders.

Aberdeen serving as capital for a day on Friday

•  ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) -- Aberdeen will serve as the state's honorary capital for a day on Friday.
•  Planned activities include a main street walk, tours around town, meetings and a fair walk.
•  Residents are encouraged to attend a 1 p.m. community roundtable meeting at the Brown County Fairgrounds Clubhouse to discuss workforce, recruitment and training.
•  They're also invited to meet with Gov. Dennis Daugaard at a 2 p.m. fair walk, and First Lady Linda Daugaard will be at the Alexander Mitchell Public Library at 1 p.m. for story time.
