SD society takes part in civil rights project

•  PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota State Historical Society's museum in Pierre will take part in a national project designed to encourage discussion of America's civil rights movement.
•  The museum at the society's Cultural Heritage Center is one of 473 institutions across the country to be awarded a set of four documentary films chronicling the history of the civil rights movement. The films and other material will be used for the project, which begins in February 2015.
•  Museum director Jay Smith says officials are just beginning to plan for project. He says the museum will work with the South Dakota Humanities Council and schools to provide a range of activities.
•  The project is called "Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle."

SD officials: Use repellent to combat West Nile

•  PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State health officials are reminding residents to use mosquito repellent and take other precautions to protect themselves against West Nile virus.
•  State epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger says neuroinvasive disease can be particularly serious for the elderly and those with health conditions such as cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure or a history of alcohol abuse.
•  South Dakota as of this week has reported 21 human West Nile cases, followed by California with 18. Ten of South Dakota's cases were neuroinvasive, while the next highest were Minnesota and Mississippi with eight cases each.
•  Kightlinger said South Dakota has also reported 172 West Nile virus-positive mosquito pools.
•  He says the virus clearly is circulating in the state, and residents should use mosquito repellents and limit evening exposure by wearing pants and long sleeves.
