Amateurs are headed to state

• Groton has a strong tradition in baseball with our teams doing well at the state tournaments. Just when you think our "Boys of Summer" are done, along comes another State tournament for us to cheer on the Groton team, as the Amateur Baseball State Tournament begins this week at the Birdcage in Sioux Falls.
• The Class B portion of the tournament includes 32 teams and is a single elimination format, Class B event includes Groton, Britton and Miller. The Class B portion begins Wednesday in Sioux Falls for a 12-day run. The tournament conclude Aug.

18 in Sioux Falls, with the Class A title game at noon and the Class B contest at 2 p.m.
• Groton Locke Electric brings a 12-6 record and a young roster to the tournament, said manager Mitch Locke. This is Groton's first state tournament appearance in four years. The amateur team has never won a state championship. Groton will face Chamberlain in its first-round game at 5:30 Friday night.
• "We have never played them," Locke said. "But I've heard they're a scrappy bunch."
• Groton will have to face some tough teams during the tournament in order to advance in the two week long tournament.
