Former SDSU basketball player named to team staff

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- Former South Dakota State University basketball player Clint Sargent has been named the team's director of operations.
• SDSU head men's basketball coach Scott Nagy says Sargent is a great addition to the team's staff because he is familiar with the program. Nagy says he expects Sargent to develop into a great college coach.
• Sargent graduated from SDSU in 2011 after twice being selected to the All-Summit League second team. He was the Jackrabbits most prolific 3-point shooter ever, making a record 252.
• Sargent returns to SDSU after playing two seasons professionally with USC Heidelberg in the German ProA League.
• Sargent says he is excited to return to SDSU to work with Nagy and the rest of the athletic department.
• Sargent is married to former Jackrabbit women's basketball player Jill Young.

Mitchel to Chamberlain rail project wins award

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota railroad rehabilitation project has captured regional acclaim from a national organization.
• The South Dakota Department of Transportation says the Mitchell to Chamberlain project was recognized in the America's Transportation Awards for its best use of innovation.
• Crews working the $28 million project replaced 61.6 miles of rail and 96,000 ties and added 63,000 tons of ballast. They also lined and surfaced the track and replaced crossings.
• The competition is sponsored by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Work began in May 2011 and was completed this past November.
• Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist says the rehabilitation has spurred construction of a grain elevator near Kimball, created jobs and allowed farmers and ranchers to ship goods at a lower cost.
