Summer street project getting close to the end

• The summer street project is quickly coming to an end. City Supervisor Terry Herron reported that the contractors will begin pouring the curb and gutter along Fifth Street and then will finish up along Sixth Street out at Olson's Development. Then there are four more blocks that need to have asphalt laid down. "The whole project is coming along very well," Herron said. The chips on the street project will be picked up in September.
• Ian Rose submitted the only bid for the former Lawrence Donley property that the city had. His bid was $4,587 and it was accepted by the council.
• Brian Bahr came before the council to discuss water issues with the new funeral home. He has requested to use black poly pipe from the curb stop to the water main instead of copper. The difference in price is about $9 a foot for the 80 feet. He needs to install 1.5" pipe, which is double the size currently in use, because of the irrigation system that is in place. City Attorney Drew Johnson stated that the city ordinance requires copper and that there is no statute that would grant a variance. "I think it's premature to go ahead and break the law," he said. "If you are going to allow plastic, then you need to change the ordinance." His request was turned down.
• The Golden Living Center has requested to use the swimming pool for an Alzheimer's fundraiser. The council gave the okay to forgive the $100 fee, stating that it was for a good cause.
• City Finance Officer Anita Lowary had requested bids from several banks for the
