• The other components of the overall index in July were:
• -- New orders at 52.2, down from 57 in June.
• -- Production or sales at 54.2, down from June's 60.3.
• -- Delivery lead time increased to 53.3 from 55.4 in June.

Suspect in ND slaying ordered held without bond

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- One of the suspects in the slaying of a South Dakota teenager in North Dakota has been ordered held without bond.
• Twenty-six-year-old Theo Crowe, of Trenton, had been jailed in Williston on unrelated charges. He made his initial court appearance in Bismarck this week. He will be appointed a public defender.
• Crowe and another man are accused of conspiracy to commit murder in the death of 18-year-old John Swain, who was reported missing in mid-May after moving to Bismarck from Sioux Falls, S.D., in search of work. Authorities say Swain's body was found in late June at the home of Crowe's grandmother in Poplar, Mont.
• The other suspect, 20-year-old Joshua Clark, of Stanley, earlier had bond set at $1 million cash. He remains jailed.

ND conference to discuss safety on reservations

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- The U.S. attorney's office in North Dakota is holding a conference to discuss public safety on American Indian reservations.
• It's the third year for the event. U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says the meeting will bring together tribal and law enforcement leaders to discuss domestic violence, juvenile justice and other topics.
• U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson, chief federal judge in North Dakota, is slated to speak at the conference, which is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck.
• North Dakota has four Indian reservations. One of them, the Standing Rock reservation, straddles the North and South Dakota border.

SD Historical Society Foundation has 4 new members

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Four people have been added to the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation board of directors.
• The foundation is headquartered at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. It is governed by a citizen board of directors.
