9 recruits graduate and join SD Highway Patrol

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- After more than eight months of training, nine recruits have officially joined the ranks of the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
• The new troopers completed basic law enforcement training and a special academy for Highway Patrol recruits. They have been in field training since May.
• At a graduation ceremony in the state Capitol building in Pierre, South Dakota Lt. Gov. Matt Michels told the new troopers that every action they take and every ticket they write will help motivate people to obey the law.
• After the ceremony, the recruits left for their initial duty stations. Some were scheduled for duty the day after the ceremony.

Rapid City to host international snowmobile event

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Rapid City has been selected to host the International Snowmobile Congress in June 2016.
• The Congress is a gathering of devoted snowmobile riders. An estimated 500 delegates from the United States, Canada, Sweden and Russia are expected at the event.
• The International Snowmobile Congress in Rapid City will run June 8-12, 2016.
• Lisa Storms with the Rapid City Convention and Visitors Bureau says the city will see an anticipated economic impact of $450,000 during the course of the event.
• South Dakota operates more than 1,500 miles of snowmobile trails in the winter.

SD Air National Guard prepares for furloughs

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Members of the South Dakota Air National Guard are facing some financial turbulence because of furloughs that begin next week.
• KELO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1c01TEt ) that 250 members of the 114th Fighter Wing will lose a quarter of their pay from Aug. 2 through September because of furloughs required by federal budget cuts.
• The crew members in Sioux Falls work four 10-hour days each week. The furloughs will cut their schedule to three days a week.
• Technical Sgt. Ryan Bak says the furloughs are forcing crew members to put some savings away or cut expenses to deal with the loss of pay.
• Bak says crew members will have to adjust to the shortened work week to still make sure jets are ready to fly.
