Today in Weather History

1921: On the summit of Mt. Wellenkuppe, in Switzerland, the temperature reached 100 degrees by 10 am. The summit has an elevation of 12,830 feet and was covered in snow.

1963: An estimated F2 tornado moved northeast from 4 miles northeast of Raymond. Barns and outbuildings were destroyed on one farm, and the home was unroofed. Asphalt was ripped off a state highway.

1874: A flash flood claimed 134 lives in Pittsburgh, PA.

1972: A sweltering two-week heat wave in New York City finally came to an end after causing 891 fatalities.

1979: The U.S. record for 24-hour rainfall was set at Alvin, TX, with exactly 43 inches (thanks to Tropical Storm Claudette).

1993: In Pueblo, CO the record high for today, 101, and the record low for today, 52, were set on same day!

1994: A dust storm near Moses Lake, WA caused a three vehicle accident, resulting in 1 death and 14 injuries.
