Groton Garden Club

The Groton Garden Club met at the home of Janice Fliehs with Suzi  Oliver  assisting on July 15, at 5:30pm. Following supper and a yard tour theme eying was called to order by president Beverly Sombke. The pledge were recited in unison and 10 members and 1 guest, Deb Olson, answered roll call with an unusual paper item recycled to the Jr. Class project. Madeline Fliehs and her mom Bridget came  to tell us about Madeline receiving the Rocky Mt. Region award for her Smokey Bear poster. Congratulations Madeline! Officers for 2013-14 were elected president, Beverly Sombke; vp Suzi Oliver; secretary Linda Gengerke ; and treasurerPat Larson. The next meeting will be August 19 , at 5:30pm with Beverly Sombke and Linda Gengerke, assisting, Janice Fliehs will have the program. Following the meeting Linda Gengerke gave a program on " flower frogs" showing several that belonged to her grandmother and mother.

Fliehs places first in state and Rocky Mountain Region

Madeline Fliehs, Groton Area Elementary School student, was named first place winner in the third grade South Dakota Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest. She also placed first in the Rocky Mountain Region of Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota.

Clubs and locally by the Groton Garden Club.
• Fliehs was presented with her award and a special gift from Alice Buchheim, state chairman of the poster contest, at the state convention held in Sioux Falls recently. Madeline is the daughter of Jeffery and Bridget Fliehs, Groton.
