Farmers urged to redistribute leafy spurge beetles
• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota agricultural officials are urging farmers and ranchers to collect and redistribute leafy spurge beetles in pastures so the insects can do a better job of controlling leafy spurge plants.
• Pete Bauman, South Dakota State University range field specialist, says beetles can reasonably be collected and moved through the middle of July. He says if beetles are moved to new patches of leafy spurge plants, landowners can keep their beetle populations going indefinitely.
• Bauman says beetles should be released toward the edge of a leafy spurge patch. Nets to collect beetles can be borrowed from county weed offices in some counties.

Forest Service seeks comment on Railroad Buttes
• HOT SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) -- The U.S. Forest Service is seeking comment on ways to improve recreation opportunities at an off-highway-vehicle area near Rapid City.
• The Forest Service is hosting a meeting on July 24 about ways to improve the experience at Railroad Buttes, a popular recreational area about 15 miles southeast of Rapid City.
• Mike McNeill, Fall River District ranger, says improvements include adding gravel, picnic tables, public toilets and a Kiosk with information. Another improvement under consideration is adding a "tot lot" for beginning riders.
• The public has 30 days to comment on the improvements.

National Native American magazine going digital

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A weekly magazine that is a leading source of Native American news is abandoning print in favor of an online-only presence, in a cost-cutting move that worries some readers who fear they may lose access because of the switch.
• This Week From Indian Country Today, a New York City-based publication owned by the Oneida Nation, will become an online newsletter starting with its July (Continued on page 20)
