School lunch program losing money

• Groton School Board members held their annual "Double Meeting" on Monday. The first meeting finished up the past school year, while the second meeting started the new school year with new members on the board.
• As part of the wrap up for the past year, the board went through the proposed budget for the next year. All the accounts are looking good, with the exception of the school lunch program. The program took a $17,000 loss over the past year due to the changes in the Federal School Lunch Program. Less students were eating in school, while the cost of food and staff went up. According to Business Manager Mike Weber, there is not much that can be done in cutting the cost of the program, most staff is already part-time.
• The board did authorize a 50 cent increase in the cost of the meals for the next school year at the last board meeting. However, this may not be enough, pending on the number of students that use the program this coming year.
• "We may have to look at supplemental funding," Weber said. "We will need to keep a close eye on this account."
• With the conclusion of the first meeting. Weber opened the second meeting. The first order of business was the election of the new officers. Dorene Nelson was voted back in as president and Kelly Kjelden returns as vice president. Appointments to the "ad hoc" committees will be done at a later meeting.
• There was some minor discussion on designating an official bank. Marty Weismantel suggested that the "wealth should be spread around" to other banks in the district. All the banks pay into the Other Revenue fund. The problem with using
