Fort Pierre voting on part of Riverwalk Landing

• FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Fort Pierre is holding a special election regarding a proposed $16 million development on the Missouri River.
• Tuesday's vote is on the validity of a city-approved permit for a boat storage area at the proposed Riverwalk Landing project. The matter was referred by opponents who unsuccessfully also tried to refer zoning changes and a deferred development fee for the project.
• Riverwalk Landing is to include a marina, restaurant and retail space. Supporters believe it will help the city by creating jobs, generating taxes and enhancing the area's quality of life. Opponents say the city is giving the proposed project preferential treatment.

SD will have no sage grouse hunting season

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota will have no sage grouse hunting season this year.
• The Game, Fish and Parks Commission has decided that no season will be held this fall because the bird's population has fallen in recent years in South Dakota and other states. In South Dakota, sage grouse are found mainly in Butte and Harding counties.
• South Dakota has had only a limited sage grouse season in prior years. Last year, 35 licensed hunters killed only nine birds.
• Wildlife biologists recommended that no season be held this year because of a continuing decline in the number of male sage grouse seen in spring breeding grounds.
• State wildlife officials have been working with federal agencies and other states in an effort to prevent the bird from being listed as an endangered species.

Marching bands to perform in DCI competition

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Marching bands from around the country will be performing in Sioux Falls on Tuesday.
• The annual Drum Corps International competition is sponsored by the Roosevelt High School and Washington High School band programs.
