SD court upholds stop in drunken driving case

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The state Supreme Court has upheld a South Dakota man's conviction for drunken driving, ruling that a Highway Patrol trooper had sufficient reason to stop the man after seeing his pickup truck cross a lane marker on the side of the highway.
• Jason Hett was stopped by a trooper in December 2011 near Buffalo in northwestern South Dakota. Hett argued the evidence against him should be thrown out because the trooper had no reasonable suspicion of a traffic violation that would justify the stop.
• But the high court says the trooper was justified in stopping Hett because the trooper had a reasonable suspicion Hett had violated the law by driving outside his lane.
• A jury convicted Hett of drunken driving and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.

SD man sentenced for stealing from fire department

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A Mission man accused of stealing money and property from the St. Francis Volunteer Fire Department has been sentenced for larceny.
• Sixty-two-year-old Harvey LaPointe was sentenced to 1 ½ years of probation and ordered to pay $4,900 in restitution for the thefts that occurred between August 2009 and December 2010.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says LaPointe was indicted in federal court in February and pleaded guilty in April.

Wheat stocks up in the Dakotas over the year

• FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- Wheat stocks are up significantly in the Dakotas over the year.
• The Agriculture Department in its latest report says stocks of all types of wheat in North Dakota on June 1 totaled 84.2 million bushels, up 22 percent from 2012. In South Dakota, they totaled 32.2 million bushels, up 37 percent.
• Corn and soybean stocks were up in North Dakota but down in South Dakota.
