Lightning sparks small Black Hills forest fires

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- One of several small Fourth of July lightning storm-sparked wildfires in the Black Hills National Forest grew to 11 acres overnight and is about 20 percent contained.
• The Great Plains Fire Information office says two of the fires in southwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming were less than an acre in size and were quickly contained.
• The Horse Trap Fire in very rugged terrain near Minnekahta Junction on Highway 18 grew to about 3 1/2 acres, but gusty overnight winds expanded it to 11 acres -- less than a square mile. Control is estimated sometime Saturday.
• Two separate campfires were left burning and unattended on Forest Service land in the Central Hills, but they were immediately put out.

Police say man shoots self during warrant serve

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Sioux Falls police say that a 42-year-old man shot and killed himself inside the basement of a house Friday as officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant.
• Police say that officers from the Sioux Falls Police Department and the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office were investigating a suspect in a series of felony warrants about 8:30 a.m. when they located him in a home asked other occupants to exit. Police say they asked the man to exit the basement but then heard a gunshot.
• The city's emergency response team blocked off the street and used a bomb squad robot to search the house before finding him alone in the basement with what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds.  His name was not released.
