• Kooren said the newfound rights will apply to same-sex couples living in South Dakota who were married elsewhere, but she said access to the full range of federal marital protections will take some work and time to achieve.
• The high court's second decision was a technical legal ruling that cleared the way for resumption of same-sex marriages in California. The justices, however, said nothing about the validity of gay marriage bans in roughly three dozen states, including South Dakota.
• Ben Nesselhuf, chairman of the South Dakota Democratic Party, said the party is committed to marriage equality and will keep working until every loving couple across South Dakota has the same rights under the law.
• "The Supreme Court's ruling today is a victory for LGBT people across the country who have fought for equal rights under the law," Nesselhuf said in a statement. "But the fight isn't over."

Obama announces new council for Native Americans

• OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Citing a history of mistreatment that has hurt Indians, President Barack Obama has established a White House Council on Native American Affairs to promote a healthier relationship among the United States and tribal governments.
• The leaders of 30 federal departments and agencies will serve on the council, which is charged with aiding tribes with economic development, transportation, housing and health care.
• Obama said Wednesday the United States must restore and heal its relationship with Native Americans. In announcing the panel's creation, he said the country "cannot ignore a history of mistreatment and destructive policies that have hurt tribal communities."
• Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is scheduled to discuss council details Thursday at the conclusion of the National Congress of American Indians Mid-Year Conference in Reno, Nev.

Human remains found NW of Pactola Reservoir

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says it's investigating the discovery of badly decomposed human remains northwest of Pactola Reservoir near Kelly Gulch.
• The remains had been spotted by an ATV driver on Tuesday, but searchers
