Poor workmanship on roof creates problems

• Groton School Board members learned that poor workmanship in the past may be the leading cause of the leaking roof at the Groton High School. Gaps in coverage and continued layers of roofing material may have cause cracks allowing water to get in under the protective coatings.
• To rectify the problem, the board has decided to remove the layers of coating down to the deck and rebuild up the protective layers the right way to insure that the roof properly drains. The board, working with HKG Architects of Aberdeen, will be advertising for bids to do the work.
• As the work is done, they will be evaluating the work done by past contractors. It is known that when the new administrative addition was added, the two roof lines were not done properly; there is also an issue with how the new skylights were installed and serviced. As these issues are uncovered, the original contractor will be asked to repair the damage at their cost or be billed the repair costs.
• Changes made to the school lunch program last year by the Federal School Lunch Program continue to affect Groton students. Many students, not liking the changes, decided to pack their lunch or go elsewhere to eat. This reduced the revenue generated by the school while at the same time the cost of providing the lunch continued to go up. To cover the deficit, the board approved a 50 cent increase in the price of school lunch and breakfasts at both schools for the 2013-2014 school year. The next step will be to look at a reduction in staff, however, many of the lunch program employees are part-time already and there is not a substantial amount of savings in a staff reduction.
•  There were no changes in the price of milk or juice offered to elementary students or in the price of admission to school events.
