Junior Teeners split with Oakes

• Groton's junior teener baseball team hosted Oakes on Wednesday and split a pair of games with the North Dakota team.
• Oakes won the first game, 14-4. Groton had several chances to score, leaving 12 runners on base including leaving four on third base. Anthony Sippel had a double while Luke Thorson had two hits and Sean Schuring had one.
• Kelby Hawkins pitched for five innings, throwing 109 pitches for five strike-outs, seven walks, nine hits and one hit by pitch. Luke Thorson pitched the last inning with two strike-outs, four walks and one hit. Marshall Lane was the catcher.
• Groton scored four runs in the fifth inning to come from behind to beat Oakes in the second game, 8-6. Oakes scored once in the sixth, but Bennett Shabazz came in to pitch in the sixth inning with three strike-outs and one hit to retire the side. Groton left 10 runners on base with three being stranded at third.
• Marshall Lane had a double and a single, Brandon Keith was two for two at bat and Anthony Sippel, Bennett Shabazz and Aaron Severson each had a hit.
• Sean Schuring pitched the first five innings, throwing 92 pitches for seven strike-outs, five walks and nine hits. Sippel and Lane were the catchers.

Kiwanis Club

• Nineteen members of the Groton Kiwanis Club met at the community center last Wednesday noon, for their weekly dinner meeting.
• Dan Dalchow, president; led a business session on the club's 60th birthday, to be celebrated on Thursday evening, June 27, 6-8 pm, with entertainment, door prizes, and free supper served.  Kathy Sundermeyer, Suzi Oliver, and Lee Schinkel, reported on the areas they are working on. Chuck Padfield, a guest, reported on his plans for food preparation.
• For the program, Orville Schaller introduced guest, Arlis Doeden, who gave information on Groton's transit system, and thanked everyone for their support.  Arlis also reported that the new census for Groton is 1,458.
