• Malloy sought to blunt Perry's thrust on jobs and industry. Connecticut's governor has made economic development a signature issue since taking office in January 2011, establishing a program consolidating tax credits to draw large employers and pushing for legislation promoting small business and bioscience jobs.
• "We compete for every job, and we're doing a pretty good job at it," he said.
• Perry also has made similar pitches in other states. He sought to talk up Texas for jobs in California's high tech, biotechnology, financial, insurance and film industries and urged Illinois employers to leave the state "while there's still time."

SD board seeks public comment on place names

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota board responsible for getting rid of offensive geographic names is seeking public comment on whether the word "Negro" is offensive.
• A state law directs the Board on Geographic Names to find replacement names for any geographic features whose names include the word "Negro." The board has been working to find new names for places that include the term "Negro," but some black people have said they do not find the word offensive.
• The board is now seeking additional public comments on whether the word "Negro" is offensive as part of a place name.
• Comments can be submitted until Aug. 1 by mail to the Department of Tribal Relations, 302 E. Dakota, Pierre, S.D. 57501. A comment form is online at http://www.sdbgn.sd.gov/

Groups to discuss Landsat 8 at EROS Center

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Nearly 120 scientists and engineers from around the world are meeting at the EROS Center this week to discuss operational and technical issues regarding the new Landsat 8 satellite.
• The federal repository north of Sioux Falls collects, archives and makes available for download more than 400 data-filled images of the Earth each day.
• The Landsat Ground Station Operators Working Group and the Landsat Technical Working Group will concentrate on establishing reception, processing and distribution capabilities for Landsat 8, which was launched into orbit 438 miles above the planet's surface in February.
