• Donovan also would like state officials to allow for the taking of any fish available to hook-and-line anglers -- not just pike.
• The sport of spearfishing involves using scuba equipment to drop below a lake or river's surface and target fish with a spear, spear gun or bow and arrow. A diver floats a red-and-white "diver down" flag over a spot to alert boaters, who are prohibited from using a gas-powered motor within 75 feet of the flag. Boaters can use their electric trolling motors.
• Game, Fish and Parks officials say expanding the sport has been a gradual process as surveys show the sport's increasing acceptance.
• Adams said the research shows that most fishing license holders either have no opinion of spearfishing or are OK with it.
• "The surveys indicated that the vast majority of people weren't up in arms about spearfishing," Adams said.
• But the commission or department has no immediate plans to open up the opportunities for more fish, he said.
• Spearfishing has sanctioned in South Dakota since the 1960s or 1970s, but activists began lobbying GF&P for expanded opportunities since 2006 and they'll con

Suspect injured in police chase in Iowa, SD

• CANTON, S.D. (AP) -- A suspect has been taken to a hospital with what authorities say are minor injuries after a police chase that started in Iowa and ended in South Dakota.
• The Thursday night chase cut a path through Lyon and Sioux Counties in Iowa and ended when the suspect crashed into a tree in Canton, S.D.
• An unoccupied Lyon County Sheriff's Office vehicle was hit by the suspect's vehicle. No officers were injured.
• There was no immediate word on what prompted the chase.
