Former Secretary of State and State Auditor Dies

• PIERRE, S.D. - Former Secretary of State and State Auditor Alice Kundert of Mound City died Monday, June 10 in Mobridge.
• The Governor has ordered the flag lowered to half-staff at the Capitol on the day of Kundert's funeral, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 13 at 10 a.m., at the Mound City Community Center.
• "Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Secretary Alice Kundert and all the South Dakotans who benefited from her devoted service to the state over several terms,"
Secretary of State Jason Gant said. "She has touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed."
• Kundert, 92, served as State Auditor from 1969 -

1979 and as Secretary of State from 1979 - 1987. She was a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor in 1986. 
• Kundert was born on a farm in Campbell County and graduated from Java High School. She attended Northern Normal School, which is now called Northern State University. She taught in various county schools.
• She was first elected to office as the deputy superintendent of schools in Campbell County. She served on the town board and the school board and later served as Campbell County's Clerk of Courts and Registrar of Deeds.
• Following her service in statewide office, Kundert traveled the schools around the state to speak to students about the 1989 South Dakota State Centennial. She also served two terms in the State House of Representatives from 1991 - 1994. 
• "Alice Kundert was a South Dakota institution for decades," said Gov. Dennis Daugaard. "Perhaps her most lasting legacy is her work with young people, which inspired many to follow her into public service."
