The Life of Marvel Johnson

• A Celebration of Life for Marvel Johnson, 90, of Groton will be 11 a.m., Wed., June 12 at the Groton United Methodist Church.  The Rev. Matt Richards will officiate.  Private inurnment will be held in Union Cemetery, Groton.
• Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
• Marvel died June 7, 2013 at Golden Living Center, Groton.
• Marvel Green Johnson was born on January 10, 1923, to Carl and Gladys (Rasmussen) Green in Aberdeen, SD.  She grew up near Claremont and graduated valedictorian of her class at Groton High School in 1941.  Upon graduation, Marvel attended SDSU majoring in Home Economics.
• On January 22, 1943, she married the love of her life, Robert A. Johnson

at the Augustana Lutheran Church near Claremont.  The couple lived on the family farm south of Groton until moving to their twin home in Groton in 2004.   They farmed and eventually started the Bob Johnson Agency.  Marvel and Bob celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on January 22, 2013.  She was a member of the Groton United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and was chosen Jewel of a Woman in 2011, a member of the Democratic Federation of Women, Mrs. S.D. one year and first runner up the second year, alternate in the Mother of the Year contest, lifetime member of P.T.A., 65 year member of P.E.O. and maintained her insurance and real estate license until she was in her late 70s.
• She is survived by her loving husband, Robert A. Johnson; her five sons, R. Van Johnson (Jean),  Sioux Falls, SD; Kent Johnson (Christie), Groton, SD; Drew Johnson (Marsha), Aberdeen, SD; Jay Johnson (Linda), Groton, SD; Marc Johnson (Jane), Groton, SD; and daughter Ann Brown (Doug),  Watertown, SD; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.
• She will forever be remembered as a devoted wife, a loving mother/grandmother/great grandmother, and a kind and generous woman.
