First day of Crazy Horse hike draws 4,400

• CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) -- More than 4,000 people hiked to the top of the Crazy Horse Memorial on the first day of this year's annual Volksmarch at the huge mountain carving in the Black Hills.
• This is the 28th year for the 6.2-mile round trip hike at the mountain where a sculpture of Lakota leader Crazy Horse is being carved.
• The memorial reports that 4,437 hikers took part in Saturday's hike, down from nearly 5,800 who registered for the first day a year ago. The second day of hiking was being held Sunday.
• The cost to participate is $3 and registration is not necessary.

3 triceratops skeletons excavated by SD institute

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The recent discovery of three Triceratops skeletons in Wyoming could include the most complete fossil of the dinosaur to date.
• The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports (http://argusne.ws/13wEeUF ) that the South Dakota-based Black Hills Institute of Geological Research and the Naturalis Biodiversity Center from the Netherlands are excavating the remains of the triceratops and the left foot and leg of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
• The newspaper reports that only two partially complete Triceratops skeletons had previously been discovered. Black Hills Institute president Pete Larson says the find in Wyoming presents an unprecedented opportunity to learn more about the plant eater.

Leaky Deadwood library to reopen Monday after fix

• DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) -- The Deadwood Public Library will reopen Monday after being closed nearly two weeks due to extensive leaks in the building's roof.
• Deadwood Public Works Director J.R. Raysor tells the Black Hills Pioneer (http://bit.ly/17OgMbM ) that a roofing company has put a new temporary skin on the library roof. A new permanent roof will be put on the library in a month or so.
• Raysor believes a hail storm that hit May 17 is responsible for knocking holes in the temporary membrane that was installed on the roof last fall. The library began leaking the following day and has been closed to the public since then.
