Madeline's Winning Essay

• My class and I were selecting kids for student council, and my teacher said to nominate a trustworthy, smart, and a person who was a good friend to everyone. Well, then he said," Someone like Madeline." I was a little confused. See, I am not the most popular kid in the 5th grade. After I won the election, I asked my teacher why he chose me. He said that I was a good leader. I knew what the definition for leader was but I was still confused about what he meant. Over the year I realized what being a leader meant to me
• Being a leader means you believe in yourself (even if you make mistakes sometimes), and showing other people the way, but letting others learn on their own, too. It also means being a good friend - always having their backs, helping friends succeed and keeping their hopes high. Sharing your interests with others and hoping they like it, too, is also important. For a Destination Imagination project, I also realized that caring for the community and helping others develops leadership. Doing the right thing, even if it's not what other kids want or is popular, shows good character, which is the most important quality for a leader to have.
• In a small town, like where I live, leaders are important to keep the community strong. As I grow, I hope my leadership will grow with me.
• Sincerely, Madeline Schuelke
