Men accused of assaulting guard plead not guilty

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Two inmates accused in an attack that left a South Dakota prison guard hospitalized have pleaded not guilty.
• Twenty-eight-year-old Carlos Green and 24-year-old Garrett Dumarce made their initial court appearances Thursday in Sioux Falls.
• Authorities say Cpl. Zane Mathis was hospitalized April 20 with a broken jaw and facial cuts after he was punched several times in the head.
• Green is charged with aggravated assault of a corrections employee. He faces life in prison.
• Dumarce is charged with aiding, abetting or advising aggravated assault against a corrections employee. He could face up to 50 years in prison.

SD state human resources commissioner retiring

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Sandy Zinter, the head of South Dakota state government's personnel agency, is retiring.
• Gov. Dennis Daugaard says he hates to see Zinter retire from her job as commissioner of the Bureau of Human Resources, but he understands her desire to spend more time with her family.
• Zinter has led the bureau for 18 years. Of the current members of the governor's cabinet, Zinter has served the longest in the same position.
• Zinter is retiring on June 7.
• Daugaard says he has appointed Kim Stahl, a former official in the Bureau of Human Resources, to serve as interim commissioner until a new commissioner is named. Stahl, retired in January after almost 35 years in state government.

Deadwood gaming numbers down in April

• DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) -- Revenue from gaming in Deadwood is down for the third month in a row.
• Total gross revenues for April 2013 were $7.9 million. This is down 6 percent from $8.4 million in April 2012.
• The handle, or total money wagered, for April 2013 decreased 5 percent, or roughly $5 million, compared to April 2012.
