Legion national commander visiting Garretson

• GARRETSON, S.D. (AP) -- The national commander of The American Legion is visiting Garretson on Thursday.
• James Koutz will visit the Post 23 Dugout on Main Street for a social at 5:30 p.m. with a dinner to follow.
• At 7:30 p.m., Koutz will speak about the programs of The American Legion and contributions being made to veterans and communities.
• All American Legion members and others who are interested are invited to attend. Reservations are required for the dinner, which costs $8.

Gov. mansion tours start next month

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The third season of free weekly tours at the South Dakota Governor's mansion will begin next month.
• Tickets for mansion tours must be obtained in advance from the Pierre Chamber of Commerce.
• The tours will start June 5. They will be conducted each Wednesday in June, July and August. No tour will be given during the week of July 4.
• The tours are 30 minutes long and start at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Up to 30 people can take part in each tour. Volunteers and First Lady Linda Daugaard will conduct the tours.
• Free tickets must be picked up in advance from the Pierre Chamber of Commerce.

SD governor calling special legislative session

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced Wednesday he will call the South Dakota Legislature into a special session sometime in late June to deal with cost overruns in the construction of a new State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.
• The Legislature earlier this year approved a bill authorizing the spending of $41.3 million in state and federal money to build the new home.
• In a message to lawmakers, the governor said that when bids from contractors were opened recently, the lowest bid was considerably above projections, leading to
