State's Attorneys Association honors 2 prosecutors

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota State's Attorneys Association has named Lawrence County State's Attorney John Fitzgerald as prosecutor of the year.
• At its recent annual meeting in Deadwood, the association also gave Mellette County State's Attorney Mick Strain a lifetime achievement award.
• Attorney General Marty Jackley says Fitzgerald has been prosecuting crime in western South Dakota for more than 32 years and has worked to seek justice and be an advocate for victim's rights.
• Jackley says Strain has been a dedicated prosecutor for more than a quarter of a century. He says the lifetime achievement award illustrates the respect Strain has earned from his peers.

2 SD students gets Gates Millennium Scholarships

• PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) -- Two students at a school on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation have been awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship.
• Red Cloud Indian School seniors Shane Star and Stormy Williams are two of the 1,000 students selected nationwide for the award. The award provides scholarships to 1,000 minority students to use at the college or university of their choice.
• While at Red Cloud, Star excelled at math. He plans to major in either civil or mechanical engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines.
• Williams took Advanced Placement classes in math and English and competes in powwows across the state. She plans to study medicine at the University of New Mexico.

SD school sharing plan moving slower than hoped

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A plan for several rural South Dakota school districts to share staff and hold more classes online will proceed more slowly than some had hoped.
• Platte-Geddes Superintendent Dennis Goodwin had proposed that his school district and those nearby join forces with shared teachers and a single superintendent to save money. The Legislature passed a law that would save small school districts from forced consolidation if they agreed to such an agreement.
