• The effort to expand the airspace is a complex process that involves working with the Federal Aviation Administration, the region's Native American tribes and the public through a detailed environmental review. A draft environmental impact statement was released in August 2010, and public hearings were held in the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana later that year to solicit public comments.
• The Air Force earlier had said a final environmental impact statement was expected to be released last winter.

South Dakota inmates indicted in guard assault

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Two inmates have been indicted on charges accusing them of assaulting a prison guard.
• South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says 28-year-old Carlos Rapheal Green faces one count of aggravated assault against a corrections employee. Twenty-four-year-old Garrett Austin Dumarce faces a charge of aiding, abetting or advising aggravated assault against a corrections employee.
• Cpl. Zane Mathis was hospitalized April 20 with a broken jaw and facial cuts after he was punched several times in the head.
• Green is serving more than 40 years for Brown County convictions that include aggravated assault. He's charged as a habitual offender, which could bring a maximum life sentence.
• Dumarce, who is serving 5 years for a Roberts County grand theft, faces a maximum sentence of 50 years with the habitual offender status.

Fort Pierre Ranger district hires acting ranger

• FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The U.S. Forest Service's Fort Pierre Ranger District has a new acting district ranger.
• Daniel Svingen comes from Bismarck, N.D, where he has served as the wildlife program manager on the Dakota Prairie Grasslands since 1999.
• He began his new duties on Monday.
• Nebraska National Forests & Grassland's supervisor Jane Darnell says Svingen brings a wealth of knowledge about the Great Plains and the National Grasslands.
• The Steele, N.D., native has worked for several agencies in ten different states during his career and has expertise in grassland management and ecological resource management, including timber, range, wildlife and fish.
