hibit will include items from before Europeans made contact with Native Americans in the region to the present day. Some items in the exhibit were collected by the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored the American West in 1804-1806, he said.
• One of the most famous pieces will be the South Dakota horse carving, which gained fame in a 1976 exhibition that also traveled to Europe, Torrence said.
• "In the world of American Indian art, all you have to do is talk about the famous horse effigy and everybody knows what you're talking about. It's a famous thing," Torrence said.
• Vogt said South Dakota officials are a little nervous about having the carving leave the state. But he said the exhibition will gain international attention that could bring visitors to the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre, where the carving is displayed in the American Indian section of the center's museum.
• "We loan artifacts to other museums, but this is just very high profile and our signature piece. It's a big deal," Vogt said.

Mitchell man pleads guilty to sex abuse charge

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A Mitchell man has pleaded guilty to a sex abuse charge.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson announced Tuesday that 30-year-old Terace Castaway pleaded guilty Monday to the charge.
• The charge stems from an incident between Aug. 1, 2008, and May 31, 2009, when Castaway engaged in sexual act with a child. As part of the plea agreement, Castaway also acknowledged sexually abusing three other young girls.
• Sentencing is set for Aug. 5. Castaway faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Former SD airman sentenced for child pornography

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A former Ellsworth Air Force Base airman caught with child pornography has been sent to prison.
• Twenty-eight-year-old Cassidy Harwell, of Kent, Wash., and his attorney had sought a sentence of probation, saying Harwell was interested in legal pornography and that resulted in him being bombarded online with child porn.
• Prosecutor Gina Nelson said Harwell was caught with more than 300 videos of child pornography on his computer, some showing children as young as 3 years old. She said, "you just don't go out and get these. You have to use specific terms."
• Judge Janine Kern ordered Harwell to serve five years in the State Penitentiary.
