SD governor urges recognition of military service

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says people should take time this month to recognize the sacrifices and successes of those who have served in the U.S. military.
• May is National Military Appreciation Month.
• The governor says the vigilance of members of the armed forces has been instrumental in preserving the nation's freedom, security and prosperity.
• Maj. Gen. Timothy Reisch (RYSH), Adjutant General of the South Dakota National Guard, says May is dedicated to all military men and women and their families. He says the month provides an opportunity to educate young people about the historical importance of the armed forces.
• The month includes Victory in Europe Day on May 8, Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 11, Armed Forces Day on May 18, and Memorial Day on May 27.

Rushmore mascots heading out on 14-city tour

• MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) -- The Mount Rushmore presidential mascots are heading out on a 14-city Midwest tour.
• Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen says the cities along the route are filled with people who have a high propensity to travel to South Dakota. He says to goal of the bus tour is to build awareness about South Dakota, create excitement and plant the seed of a South Dakota vacation.
• The gray people-sized George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln have previously made appearances at Major League baseball games and the Macy's Day parade.
• The bus will visit, Omaha, Neb., Lincoln, Neb., Kansas City, Mo., Des Moines, Iowa, Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Wis., Eau Claire, Wis., Minneapolis, Minn., Fargo, N.D., and Rapid City, Pierre, Watertown, and Sioux Falls in South Dakota starting May 23.
