South Dakota governor appoints new circuit judge

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Belle Fourche (foosh) attorney Mike Day will be the new

est judge in South Dakota's Fourth Judicial Circuit.
• Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced the appointment Friday. Day will fill the vacancy created by the upcoming retirement of Judge John Bastian. The Fourth Circuit includes Butte, Corson, Dewey, Harding, Lawrence, Meade, Perkins and Ziebach counties.
• Day has practiced law in Belle Fourche since 1983. He is a past president of the State Bar and has served on the Judicial Qualifications Commission, the State Bar Disciplinary Board, and as president of the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association.
• Daugaard says he was particularly impressed with Day's community service. He is vice chairman of the school board and a member of the state Board of Minerals and Environment.
• Day says it's an honor to be appointed.

Permitted building in Sioux Falls on a record pace

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The amount of building in South Dakota's largest city is on a record pace
• The city has permitted $200 million worth of construction so far this year. It is the earliest the city has ever reached that benchmark. The previous record was the end of May in 2007.
• City officials say the next-highest construction valuation on record at the end of April was $138 million in 2005.
• Chief Building Official Ron Bell says some large commercial projects and construction of hotels, apartments and condominiums is behind this year's high number.
• Planning and Building Services Director Mike Cooper says it's a response to increases in population and employment and an expanding economy.

SD woman sentenced for defrauding fed government

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota woman convicted of defrauding the federal government has been sentenced to a year of probation and $7,400 in restitution.
