• The Arbor Day Foundation has designated SDSU's campus as a Tree Campus USA campus. As part of that designation, Ball's students are conducting an inventory of trees on campus. In the past they have helped design landscaping on campus and assisted with tree plantings.

SDSU reaches nearly $256 million in fundraising

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota State University has completed the largest higher-education fundraising effort in state history.
• Campus officials on Friday announced nearly $256 million in gifts and pledges during a rally on campus.
• President David Chicoine (SHEE'-kwin) thanked the leadership of the SDSU Foundation for accepting the challenge of spearheading the It Starts With State campaign. He says the generous donations will allow aspirations to become reality and enable the university to make a difference for people in South Dakota and the region.
• The fundraising effort focused on strengthening the faculty, opportunities for students, new and revitalized facilities, athletics and funds that enrich the student experience.
• The Council of Trustees of the SDSU Foundation in 2008 voted to support a campaign with a working goal of $190 million.

US Fish and Wildlife name new duck stamp winner

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it has disqualified a 6-year-old South Dakota girl from accepting a $5,000 scholarship after her painting was selected for a federal duck stamp.
• Six-year-old Madison Grimm, of Burbank, was selected as the winner of the Federal Duck Stamp contest last week. But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Friday that she was disqualified after officials learned she had copied it from an image, which is against contest rules.
• The original runner up, 17-year-old Peter Coulter of Washington, Mo., has been named the new winner.
• Proceeds from sales of the $5 Junior Duck Stamp support environmental education.
