Boomer Babble - Thoughts at Large
Habit vs. Change
By Charles Ortman

•   Boomers, we are creatures of habit and it is sometimes hard to break the old habits of how to do things to the new ways. It is not always because of our age that we will fumble around with new things. You are sharp people and are perfectly capable of using new conveniences but because of old habits we look like old geezers who can't get the paper towel out of the dispenser. In fact, that is a good example.  More than once I have been in a public restroom and am washing my hands.  First I had to turn on the water by waving my hand around the faucet to get some water, because we would all die from some awful infectious disease if we touched a handle.  Now I wave my wet hand around in front of the soap dispenser to get that little squirt of soap and water from my hand goes every where.  Fine. I finish washing my hands and go to the paper towel dispenser.  I wave my hands in front of it, under it, to the sides; nothing. I make bigger and bigger gestures to get the paper towel, looking like I am trying to guide a plane in.  Then I stop and take a better look at it.  It will be one from a couple of generations ago that you have to pull the paper our of, or push on a bar to get it.  See what I mean?  Some kid is watching and thinks, "That old guy may need help to find his way out of the bathroom."
•   Another example of modern technology that I have to wonder what the great need for change is the light switch.   Evidently it must either be way too much work or time consuming to actually push the light switch up or down. Now we have pads you push in or wave your hand over or a flat surface you just touch to turn on the lights.  Why? I feel a need to have someone educate me. I must be missing something.
•    Speaking of light switches, when you get in someone else's car, can you find the switch, knob, button, sensor, or whatever to turn the lights on or off?  There certainly couldn't be a label that says something like 'lights' because why; it would hurt the style or aesthetics of the dashboard? And another thing; would it kill them to say on and off on the power button instead of some squiggly lines?
•   So when you see a Boomer waving their hands around or pounding on a faucet, we probably haven't snapped.  But you might want to stand back out of the way just in case.
