SD Civil Air Patrol holding annual conference

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol is holding its annual conference on Saturday.
• Officers and cadets will get training on new policies and technologies, participate in drug demand awareness and award members for their accomplishments.
• Former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds, a CAP cadet, will address members at 5 p.m. at the Kings Inn Conference Center before an evening awards banquet.

Furniture exhibit opens at state heritage center

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society is debuting an exhibit at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre focusing on furniture found in the home.
• "Furniture: The Fancy & The Functional" opens Saturday with free admission, a public reception and refreshments from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
• The exhibit in the Marvis T. and Florence Brown Hogen Gallery allows visitors to study both the fancy and functional materials in current and past homes. Artifacts including a famous wooden desk to a metal dinette set all come from the museum's permanent collection. Some of the furniture on display has never been exhibited before.
• Museum Director Jay Smith says staff worked hard to create a visually stimulating and educational exhibition with hands-on activities.

Rivers theme of History Conference next month

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Rivers will be the theme of the 2013 South Dakota State Historical Society History Conference next month in Rapid City.
• The society's Archaeological Research Center in Rapid City will host the conference May 3-4 at the Hilton Garden Inn. The theme is "Rivers Run Through it: South Dakota's Rivers and Streams and the Flow of History."
• Speakers at the conference will discuss the role rivers played in the history and cultural development of the state and region. Among the topics to be discussed will be the role rivers played in the development of ancient societies in South Dakota and historical floods in the state.
