• Chemistry II - Kristen Gonsoir
• Chemistry II has just finished its survey of the final group of organic chemicals, amines. The last few weeks of the year will be spent studying stereoisomers. Stereoisomers are atoms with the same molecular formula but a different arrangement of the atoms in space. The atoms in a molecule can sometimes be arranged in "handedness" or are chiral. Stereoisomers are chiral, meaning they are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, like your right and left hand. Many things in nature display chirality. Physical objects that are chiral in nature include seashells. Chirality in molecules often gives different properties such as smell and biological behavior to molecules. It is only the correct orientation in space that will fit into certain biological spaces so chirality plays an important role in developing pharmacological agents.
• Debate- Kristen Gonsoir
• The debate season has been extended due to weather. The final student congress (congressional debate) contest was to have been held April 12th in Pierre, however, weather forced the postponement of the contest to April 25th. Due to the rescheduling the Capitol building was no longer available so the contest will be held at LATI in Watertown. Nine different students participated in congressional debate this past year. Overall the debate program saw an increase in total participants this year, with the most growth being in the category of forum debate.
