pool when the weather turns warm for a portion of a couple of afternoons each week.  It looks like there will be lots to do and we encourage students to come check out what GRASP has to offer during the summer months here at Groton Area Elementary.  Watch for the letter that will be coming home soon from GRASP for those interested in attending some or all of the summer GRASP program.

• If you recall last month's edition of my newsletter, I opened with a greeting followed by the statement, "We're still anxiously waiting the spring that the calendar promises" and I stand by that statement yet today.
• The extended winter season has caused some significant problems for our track and golf teams, but some students have done very well for themselves in other co-curricular activities, a few of which I'll mention here.  At the 60th Annual Northern State University Math Contest, Landon Marzahn earned fourth place in the Algebra I division; Gabbie Kramer and Keri Pappas each earned honorable mention in the Algebra I division; and Talia Dohman and Kaitlin O'Neill each received honorable mention in the Geometry division.  The contest consists of approximately 575 students competing across all categories.
• The Groton Area FFA Chapter has also done remarkably well at the State FFA Convention in Brookings.  The Livestock team of Maryn Howard, Carly Wheeting, Braden Miller, and Hailey Hanson placed second.  The Vet Science Team of Joellen Gonsoir, Amanda Worlie, Lauren Kulwicki, and Tyra Leonhardt place third.  Other individual winners from the state convention include Wyatt Sombke (Natural Resources), Brody Sombke (Natural Resources), Lauren Kulwicki (Horse Judging), Alec Voss (Crop Judging), Hayden Anderson (Ag Mechanics), and Nathan Wright (Ag Mechanics).
• The Destination Imagination program has qualified three teams for the Global Competition on Knoxville, TN at the end of May.  From the middle school and high school, the Out of the Boxers (Nathan Fjelstad, Trey Wright, Erin Smith, Kerri Pappas, Halie Yarborough, and Lily Cutler) and What a Catch (Hailey Donovan, Cassidy Fiala, Andee Geist, Jacob Donley, and Allen Baker) each qualified to compete at the Global Competition.  Congratulations!
• The students of Groton Area continue to amaze and inspire me by their commitment to school and their school activities.  Many of them also contribute in very meaningful and significant ways to their community outside of the school.  It is through the cumulative process of involvement, civic, school, and social, that our students will graduate with the requisite skills to compete in the global economy.
• Before the next school newsletter is printed, the Groton Area High School Class
