Freeman police chief suspended after indictment

• FREEMAN, S.D. (AP) -- The police chief in Freeman has been suspended after city officials learned he was indicted on charges of obtaining prescription painkillers from different medical providers.
• Chief Eric Seitz in charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance -- hydrocodone and carisoprodol -- obtained concurrently from different medical practitioners.
• Freeman City Attorney Mike Fink tells KSFY television that Seitz is suspended without pay. Fink says the suspension is also necessary because the terms of Seitz's bond don't allow him to hold a firearm.
• One of Freeman's police officers will take on more hours and the city may ask the Hutchinson County Sheriff's Office for patrol help.
• The city found out about the indictment Monday and suspended Seitz on Tuesday.
• The South Dakota Attorney General's Office is prosecuting the case.

Commissioner of School and Public Lands resigns

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota governor's office says the state's commissioner of School and Public Lands is resigning his position this summer for family reasons
• Jarrod Johnson was elected to the post in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. The position is a constitutionally-created office that administers state lands set aside to support schools and state institutions.
• The Republican from Corson sent a letter to Gov. Dennis Daugaard saying his resignation is effective Aug. 15. Daugaard will appoint someone to fill out the remainder of Johnson's term, which ends in January 2015.
• Johnson says he's enjoyed his time in the office managing resources held in trust on behalf of students and endowed institutions.
