• "I feel they are acting in a prudent manner," Vehle said.
• Rep. Timothy Johns, R-Lead, said the Brand Board met all legal requirements when it proposed the increase, held a public hearing and approved the new fee. He said the committee had no reason to block the fee increase.
• Nathan Sanderson, a policy adviser to Gov. Dennis Daugaard, said the governor supports the Brand Board's decision because the extra money will be used only to support the inspection program.
• Even though the Stockgrowers Association opposed the 10-cents-a-head increase, the South Dakota Cattlemens Association supported it.
• The Brand Board a year ago raised the inspection fee from 80 cents to 90 cents with the expectation that an extra fee could be charged to those who have small numbers of cattle inspected at their farms and ranches. After this year's Legislature rejected that extra fee, the board last month decided to seek the $1 fee for all inspections.

SD man accused of shooting at car gets prison

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A Fort Pierre man has been sentenced to prison for a variety of charges stemming from shooting at an occupied vehicle.
• Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Tuesday that Derek Boe was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated assault, 20 years for firing a firearm into an occupied vehicle and five years for possessing a firearm as a felon. The sentences will be served concurrently.
• Authorities say Boe shot inside a vehicle that his girlfriend occupied in January 2012.
• A jury earlier found Boe not guilty to attempted murder.
• Boe was also sentenced to five years in prison for possessing methamphetamine while out on bond in August 2012. That sentence will be served consecutively to the others.

Adult, child killed in Sioux Falls apartment fire

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- One adult and one child died in an apartment fire in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, while three other children were taken to a hospital, authorities said.
• The victims had all been inside the same apartment, and it appeared that the adult took three children outside to safety before attempting to go back in for the
