residents' access to better-quality healthy foods, Vilsack said.
• In Sumter County, 74 percent of adults are considered overweight or obese, compared to South Carolina's overall rate of 67.4 percent.
• "The key to nutrition is access to foods that are healthy and nutritionally dense," Vilsack said. If farmers grow more of their own fruits and vegetables, he said, "people don't have to rely on a convenience store that has a very limited set of offerings."
• South Carolina has been considering asking the USDA for a waiver to allow the state to restrict food stamp recipients to certain purchases with the aim of encouraging healthier eating. Vilsack said his agency was also looking at ways to encourage people to eat better, such as discounting some purchases for food stamp recipients but subsidizing the transactions so that retailers get paid full price.

Custer eighth-grader is SD spelling champ

• CUSTER, S.D. (AP) -- An eighth-grade student from Custer is South Dakota's spelling champ.
• Max Oesterling correctly spelled "pronouncement" to win the oral competition of the University of South Dakota Scripps Spelling Bee over the weekend.
• Oesterling took part in the spelling bee as a representative of the South Dakota Christian Home School Association. He will represent South Dakota in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in late May.

Last college baseball games at Metrodome this week

• MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Metrodome is hosting its final college baseball games this week.
• The University of Minnesota will play its last baseball game at the Dome ever on Wednesday. The Golden Gophers will take on South Dakota State at 6:35 p.m.
• The Dome's college baseball schedule wraps up Saturday with a game between North Dakota State and North Dakota.
• The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority has been getting calls from colleges looking to book baseball games in early April if the weather doesn't clear up.
• Plans call for the Metrodome to be torn down early next year to make way for the Minnesota Vikings' new stadium. The Vikings' new stadium will be designed to accommodate a baseball field.
