SD Brand Board member expects drop in cattle herd

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State Brand Board member Curt Mortenson of Fort Pierre says he expects the lingering drought and low prices will cause South Dakota farmers and ranchers to sell many of their cattle.
• Mortenson says long-range forecasts indicate South Dakota and the rest of the Northern Plains could get rain to relieve the drought that started more than a year ago. But he says he's worried that cattle prices will continue to drop.
• Mortenson says a drop in the state's cattle herd will mean fewer brand inspections will be done in the program aimed at preventing the theft of cattle and horses in western South Dakota. That's why he and other members of the Brand Board decided to increase the inspection fee from 90 cents to $1 a head.

Students at SD school to scrimmage during NBA game

• PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) -- Ten student-athletes at a school on a South Dakota Indian reservation will get the chance to play at a professional arena when they scrimmage during the halftime of the Denver Nuggets game.
• The students from Red Cloud Indian School on the Pine Ridge reservation will scrimmage one another between halves when the Nuggets take on the Sacramento Kings Saturday night at 7 p.m.
• This is the third year athletes from Red Cloud have been invited to scrimmage during a game.
• Lisa Johnson is the executive director of Basketball Administration. She says she invited the students to participate to recognize the students' perseverance and excellence in the classroom.

Roberson's injury shaped her great freshman year

• BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- Redshirt freshman Arielle Roberson is living out her very own silver linings playbook.
• Shortly after arriving at the University of Colorado last season, she tore her left labrum, requiring season-ending surgery, something she now says made her both a better player and a better person.
