• "We're sitting somewhere between 3, 4, 5, 6 inches of water in the snow already," he said. "Additional (moisture) will add to it, but as far as (the flood risk) going up significantly higher, that probably isn't in the cards."
• Lukes estimated the new snow in the southern Red River Valley contained about half an inch of water, and the snow in the northern valley about 3- to 4-tenths of an inch.
• This system continues a pattern of winter weather in the area, as Fargo saw several inches of snow Friday. It also was preceded by record cold. The temperature at Grand Forks dropped to minus 18 degrees on Saturday and minus 23 degrees on Sunday -- both city records for those dates.

SD prison officer, inmates hurt in traffic crash

• DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota corrections officer and some state prison inmates were injured when a vehicle transporting the inmates was involved in an accident in the northern Black Hills.
• The state Corrections Department reports that the officer was taking seven inmates from the Rapid City Minimum Unit to a work site near Deadwood when the vehicle slid into the ditch and rolled along U.S. Highway 14A early Monday morning.
• One of the inmates was airlifted to Rapid City Regional for treatment. The remaining six inmates were taken to the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital, where one was treated for an injured shoulder and two were treated for minor injuries. The other three inmates were not injured.
• The correctional officer was treated and released at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Jobless rates rise in January in half of US states

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- Unemployment rates increased in half of U.S. states in January from December, as employers nationwide added the fewest jobs in seven months.
• The Labor Department said Monday that unemployment rates rose in 25 states. They fell in only 8 states and were unchanged in 17.
• Despite the increase, some long-suffering states showed improvement in January.
• Florida's unemployment rate fell below the national level for the first time in five years, further evidence that the state is recovering from a deep housing slump.
• And Michigan, which has benefited from the comeback of the auto industry,
